Practices for children and teenagers
Aikido is particularly suitable for children and teenagers.
In Aikido, children use playful elements to train themselves to be aware of their own bodies. Movement coordination forms the basis of training, alongside attention and concentration. Children learn to be more aware of their bodies and to manage their own energy and that of their training partners. Their urge to move is encouraged. Self-confidence, courage and trust in their own abilities are encouraged. Enjoyment and fun in discovering new movements are very important in training. Particular attention is paid to ensuring that children learn with and from each other. Peaceful, respectful interaction with each other is taught as a fundamental value.
Teenagers learn about the variety of techniques. They practise effective defence through evasion, defence and falling techniques. Whether throwing, joint lock, holding or rolling techniques, in Aikido training young people learn about their effectiveness and interrelationships. This improves physical strength, agility and coordination, as well as concentration and endurance. Teaching the values of budo is also part of the training.
There are no competitions in aikido, but kyu examinations are held for children and young people at the appropriate time. At the age of around 14–15, young people are admitted to adult training, and the trainers help with the transition.
We are members of Aikido Jugend Schweiz. The association brings together the largest aikido associations in Switzerland. Together, we have the task of promoting aikido through a joint approach in cooperation with young people, especially in the area of Jugend und Sport (J+S).
